Crop Protection in the Rainy Season

Over the past weekend, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai experienced the Level 6 Typhoon In-Fa. It came strong and hard, and lasted for nearly four days! It is expected that In-Fa will continue northward after it reaches land, and will persist until end July, and the scope of impact will also move north to Huanghuai and even the eastern part of North China. Anhui, Jiangsu, Shandong and other places will all be affected by significant rainfall.

Such strong wind and heavy rain not only causes damage to crops, but also make our crops susceptible to various diseases and inadvertently affect crop production.

In order to cope with the impact of strong winds and heavy rainfall on agricultural production and ensure the safety of agricultural production, we would like to share how Haygrove growers mitigate weather risks from 3 aspects: tunnel and farm drainage design, tunnel reinforcement, and pest management after rain.

Tunnel and Farm Drainage Design

When designing and constructing a farm, it is advisable to collect weather data during the rainy season, and pay attention to the design of drainage ditch and tunnels' rain gutters, and strengthen the foundation of drainage facilities via daily maintenance. An efficient drainage system can quickly direct excess water away from the farmland, and at the same time reduce the level of humidity and thereby reducing the likelihood of pests and diseases.

The rain gutter of Haygrove tunnels is designed to collect rainwater collected in the catchment area of the tunnel. Rainwater can be collected and stored for crop irrigation. The rain gutter keeps the water from flooding the plants in the walkway, which is very important. The risk of crop damage due to flooding is reduced, and there is no accumulation of water in the tunnels. The rain gutter is made of pre-galvanized steel, which increases the corresponding strength for the walkway of the tunnels.

Tunnel Reinforcement

Before the arrival of strong winds and heavy rainfall, the tunnels and other production facilities should be well-maintained and sufficiently reinforced; the tunnels should be checked regularly for any loose structures, the ropes should be constantly tightened. It is not just Haygrove's efforts of providing an efficient farm, but also the farm owner's responsibility to ensure that everything remains in working order!

The wind conditions of the farm location will always be taken into consideration when designing a farm, and we would make recommendations on additional reinforcements when windproofing is necessary. Haygrove uses high-strength HSO steel for the steel frame of our tunnels, which can increase the strength of the hoop frame and prevent deformation during wind, hail, heavy rainfall and snowfall; each end of every tunnel will contain windproof components; trellis cables are laid out in a pattern to cover the whole tunnel in a continuous alignment with the legs and hoops; the cables on the side connect the legs longitudinally to increase the stability of the tunnel structure.

Pest Management

Wind and rain are conducive to the spread of pathogens and will accelerate the infestation and disease caused by pests after rain.

The prevention and treatment should focus on "prevention first", and so Haygrove growers will regularly perform treatment sprays. When strong winds and rain come, mature or about to mature crops will be harvested as soon as possible to reduce losses. After a storm, the tunnel should be inspected and repaired in time. For tunnel polythene that have been blown off or damaged, replace them with new ones promptly.

As we all know, Haygrove has focused on growing systems and planting technologies for more than 30 years. We are both a grower and a growing systems manufacturer. The dual role of synergy allows us to leverage on our advantages.

Storms are actually not scary. The damage is. Therefore, the most important thing is to start with the design and the selection of the tunnel first, and put the protective measures on priority. Only then can the economic loss of a storm be reduced to the bare minimum.

Haygrove also hopes to rely on the relevant experience accumulated as a grower to bring the maximum labor efficiency and crop yield guarantee to the majority of growers.
